Functional Manual Therapy (FMT) is a specialized, hands-on treatment that integrates soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, and neuromuscular facilitation to restore movement, reduce pain, and enhance overall function.
At Retrain Physical Therapy, we embrace a holistic and patient-centered approach, focusing on restoring functional efficiency and promoting overall health. We integrate advanced manual therapies, including Functional Manual Therapy, Visceral Manipulation, and Craniosacral Therapy, to address the unique needs of each patient. My philosophy is to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms, and to understand the interconnectedness of the body's systems.
FMT enhances joint and soft tissue function, allowing for better movement and physical performance.
Targets musculoskeletal imbalances and dysfunctions that contribute to chronic pain and discomfort.
Combines hands-on therapy with movement training to retrain muscles and enhance coordination.
If you experience ongoing pain or tension, FMT helps realign structures and restore normal function in the body.
Chronic neck & back pain – Releases tight muscles and mobilizes joints for lasting relief.
TMJ & jaw pain – Improves bite alignment and relieves tension in facial muscles.
Arthritis & joint pain – Increases joint mobility and reduces inflammation.
Fibromyalgia & myofascial pain – Relieves deep muscle tension and enhances circulation
FMT supports neurological function by restoring movement efficiency and nervous system coordination.
Stroke rehabilitation – Improves motor control and retrains muscle function.
Sciatica & nerve pain – Alleviates compression and irritation of nerves.
Post-surgical recovery – Restores flexibility and function after surgery (e.g., knee replacements, rotator cuff repairs).
Carpal tunnel syndrome & nerve entrapment – Reduces inflammation and improves nerve function
FMT is widely used by athletes to recover faster and improve performance.
Rotator cuff injuries – Improves shoulder function and prevents re-injury.
Runner’s knee & shin splints – Addresses imbalances affecting running mechanics.
Tendonitis & ligament injuries – Reduces inflammation and restores strength.
Posture & movement efficiency – Enhances biomechanics for improved sports performance.
FMT corrects muscle imbalances and movement limitations caused by poor posture.
Forward head posture & slouched shoulders – Realigns the spine for better posture.
Scoliosis & spinal imbalances – Helps manage spinal curvature and prevents progression.
Work-related strain (sitting, standing, lifting injuries) – Improves movement efficiency and ergonomic alignment.
Pelvic misalignment & core instability – Strengthens deep stabilizing muscles for better balance

I’m Vidhi Shastri, PT, MS, CFMT, a dedicated physical therapist with a deep passion for helping others achieve optimal health and well-being. My journey began in India, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in physical therapy in 2009. After working in India for a year, I decided to further my education in the United States. I pursued my Master’s degree in exercise science and kinesiology at California Baptist University, Riverside, CA, and graduated in 2012. Since then, I’ve worked in various outpatient practices in the Upper East Side and Midtown, New York City, gaining valuable experience in treating a wide range of conditions.
During my time in New York, I was introduced to Functional Manual Therapy (FMT), an integrated approach that combines mechanical treatment of the joints, soft tissues, visceral, and neurovascular systems with manual neuromuscular facilitation. This method resonated with me, and I became a Certified Functional Manual Therapist (CFMT) in August 2018 through the Institute of Physical Art. My continuous curiosity about the body and its systems led me to further explore Visceral Manipulation and Neural Manipulation at the Barral Institute and Craniosacral Therapy at the Upledger Institute since October 2018. These experiences have enriched my practice, allowing me to provide comprehensive and holistic care to my patients.
